Critiquing Jessica's Blog

Hi Jessica,

I like your blog! It matches your personality -simple but full of quality! The way you write grabs my attention. I like the fact that you seem so natural and down to earth when communicating with the world. You still maintained professionalism and you writing skills are excellent! The color you selected is not bright but I imagine that you wanted a newspaper effect, which is not a bad idea. The white on it makes it easy to read and also the colors of the videos and spreadsheet put a hint of life on it. The only thing I believe you could have done was to upload the other things we did, as they relate to your reflections, so the reader could see examples of what was actually learnt. I know it was difficult for most of with uploading, but it is not too late to do that as we need the practise.

Good Luck Jessica with EDET when you get to the classroom. I think you will do an excellent job!

Kind regards,

Laetitia

EDET (Week 8)

G'day all!

Looks like my EDET class is coming to a close but I have just one more thing to share. This week I learned about the Excel Spreadsheet and Microsoft word. I knew about it before, I used them. Well, excel, not so much because I didn't see there was any use for it. But during this week I realized there were a lot of ways it could be used in the classroom for any subject.

It is said that Educational Technology is there to make work easier, right? Well, I discovered that excel can be very beneficial for teachers, especially when it comes to making schedules, using it for a register or even as an evaluation tool. I never really thought about it but excel can also be used to make a grade book and with the function feature that's within it, excel can tally up the averages of your students' grades for you. I thought that was really cool. Students can probably use it as well for keeping track of the classes and subjects they have and at what time by making their own schedules and could probably use it for presentations especially when they want to show the difference between something or classifying things. There are so many things it can be used for, it's filled with rows and columns and very helpful features.

Now everyone knows about word. I only just now discovered though how to make a pdf. file. It's a little embarrassing but I never actually thought that pdf files were created in Microsoft word. With the aid of the teacher I was able to create my own about my learning style. I think it looks really nice with its border and everything. Things like this could be used as illustration in the classroom when you want to creatively bring across a topic that will interest the students. Microsoft word can be used for many other things, like making posters, charts, even graphs. What was interesting was the fact that when you want to create a graph in Microsft word, it will help you to create the graph by pulling up excel and the values you'd like to display within your graph is shown. When you change the value it changes the graph. This benefits teachers and students alike so they wouldn't have to rely only on markers, paper or manila alone. Using Microsoft word really does help make your presentations easier.

My Critique

In my initial visit to this blog i was a little drawn back about the color scheme. I guess that's just Jessica's style but the information is comprehensive and the structure of the blog is developing very good, but if you really want individuals to visit your blog highlight it some more.

EDET - Movie Maker

Evening all

So this was totally my favorite week ever because I got to make a movie. It was a great movie but it still was one. I learned how I can put power point slides into a movie and how to add music and even edit the music I wanted in audacity. It was really fun. In class we did group work to see how we could use a movie to teach students a lesson. The group I was in showed how a lesson about vertebrates could be brought to the students through a movie, using the voice of one of the group members to explain what is a vertebrate, what types of animals were vertebrates and so on, while showing images so the students could identify them.

Students could probably use the movie maker in a similar fashion, by creating a presentation of their understanding of a lesson or a project they might have had to do and probably in many other different ways. As I have said before, when given the opportunity, students are very creative and could do many things when they have explored and have learned to use such programmes.

EDET - Assure Model

Hallo all

Yes, that word isn't really hello, but I find myself saying it. Anywho the Assure Model. It is interesting to learn that there's a process a teach has to go through to make sure her work would come across the students effectively. I've never taught before so this was actually new to me. The Assure Model is something a teach can use to create a lesson plan. She can even make sure that what she is teaching and how she is teaching is sufficient and effective to those she is teaching. I think it would make sense to plan a lesson because it would cause chaos otherwise and the students wouldn't have learned anything. So many things that could go wrong without properly planning a lesson, for example:

  1. You might run out of the time that you were supposed to teach a lesson and students wouldn't have learned much.
  2. The activities you might have decided to use to teach the students with might either be too challenging or not challenging enough depending on who is being taught.
  3. The method that was used to teach the students might not have attracted their attention and they probably didn't understand the lesson.
The list could go on.

I do plan on using the Assure Model to help me with lesson planning, it seems beneficial and very convenient.

EDET - Podcast

Hello everyone!!

Well, I learned about pod casting. I was a bit nervous because I thought I had to create one. I didn't as yet, but I'm still pretty nervous about it. I learned that podcasting was an amateur broadcast created by anyone about anything and if someone was interested, they can subscribe to that person and get new podcasts from that person every time there was a new one and listen to it at anytime, anywhere, as long as they had a device that could play it.

I believe a teacher could use a podcast to broadcast helpful information for students on subjects she's doing or on study tips or if she is not feeling well on a day she has to teach she could send a podcast to her students on the subject she was supposed to teach so they wouldn't miss anything.

Students could probably be more creative with it, by using it to create their own journal or in presentations to make it more interesting or about anything they feel. Young people are very creative and when given the option they can do anything with something such as podcast.

Although I have a slight fear of podcasting, I would probably use it someday. I'm glad I'm learning about it now, getting an idea of it so that I would be able to use it in the future.

Here's an example of me using audacity, a program that can be used when making a podcast.

EDET - Creating My Blog

Hey all another post

Well, when I heard I had to create a blog, I wasn't that all excited. The first thing I thought was: "Oh no! Online diary, nooooo!" I have had bad experiences when diaries, so I wasn't too thrilled when I was told I had to make a virtual one that everyone could see. Well, it wasn't too hard to make since I got help with classmates and read instructions. I got some comments on it though, what do you think?
